A selection of 160 labels showed the past 27 and 28th November to the most important Irish opinion leaders the potential of Spain as wine country. Best of Spain Wine Challenge Ireland 2018 announces its results: ambassadors of the diversity and uniqueness of Spain’s vineyard that already have an additional support to its quality, the one coming from the most influential firms in a market in constant growth as is Ireland’s.

Nine Great Gold Medals (scores over 92 points), those reached by the white elaborations La Trucha Barrica (DO Rias Baixas), Granbazan Limousin 2015 (DO Rias Baixas) and Finca Viñoa 2017 (DO Ribeiro) and the reds Finca La Estacada Varietales 2015 (DO Uclés) and Riojas’ Bordón Reserva 2012, Beronia Reserva 2014, Marqués de Riscal 150 Aniversario 2010, Sierra Cantabria Colección Privada 2015 and La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 harvest 2009, lead a podium that also includes thirty Gold Medals (scores over 88 points) and eight Silver Medals (over 84 points), the most solid proof of the high level of scores obtained by the participating wines.

During two intense days three Masters of Wine like Lynne Coyle, Barbara Boyle and Jane Boyce, top journalists like Matthew Nugent (The Sun), John Wilson (Irish Times), Liam Campbell (The Taste.ie), Aoife Cariggy (Irish Food Writers' Guild), Gabriela Guedez (The Taste.ie), Jules Mahon (The taste.ie), Maureen O'Hara (The Daily Star) and Raymond Blake (Food & Wine), and sommeliers like Philip Dunne (The Westbury Dublin), Ian Brosnan (Ely Wine Bars), Pierre Faure (Ashford Castle) and Lisa O'Docherty (5 Star K Club) enjoyed a pioneering initiative such as Best of Spain Wine Challenge, a project led by the Spanish Wine Tasters Association to reinforce the image of Spanish wines in commercial destinations as attractive and competitive as Ireland is.

First edition of Best of Spain Wine Challenge Ireland closed with two unanimous conclusions by the tasting panel: the necessity of this type of promotional actions in order to consolidate Spain as high quality exporting wine country and in the case of Spanish wines the request from professionals and consumers of a broader catalog of wines made with native grape varieties such as Verdejo, Godello, Treixadura, Garnacha, Mencía, Monastrell or Bobal, a pending subject that Best of Spain Wine Challenge sets as a priority objective for future editions of this contest.
